New themes and graphic tools for Ubuntu: RenRot, RgbPaint, Ripmake and Recoverjpg.

RenRot, rename and rotate files according to EXIF tags.

Renrot renames files according the flexible name template (allowing DateTimeOriginal and FileModifyDate EXIF tags, if they exist.

Otherwise, the name will be set according to the current timestamp).

It can aggregate files according to shooting time period. It can losslessly rotate JPEGs and their thumbnails according to the Orientation EXIF tag or a given angle.

It can put commentary into the Commentary and UserComment tags.

Personal details can be specified via XMP tags defined in a configuration file.

RgbPaint, A very basic painting program.

rgbPaint is a very basic GTK based program designed for editing pixel based images.

It is a fork of mtPaint. It can only edit and save RGB images to PNG, JPEG, or ICO files.

It can read PNG, JPEG, TIFF, GIF, ICO, files and possibly others like TGA, PCX, and SVG if they're installed with your version of GTK+2.

At the beginning of January 2007 Mark Tyler decided to fork version 3.09 of mtPaint to see how easy it would be to create a very basic painting program which could run on the One Laptop Per Child Sugar system.

After just 2 weeks of hacking he managed to finish the program, which functioned well in Sugar, and any other GTK+2 based GNU/Linux system. rgbPaint is much simpler than mtPaint, with no menus for example. Also it is only able to edit and save RGB images. It is a GTK+2 only program, and uses the pixbuf facilities for file handling so it does not depend on file libraries like mtPaint does, i.e. libpng, libjpeg, libtiff, and libungif/giflib.

Ripmake, an automatic command line ripping makefile generator for transcode.

A tool which automatically (i.e. with as few user interaction as possible) selects the best parameters for a given ripping task. It should inspect the source (e.g. a DVD or an AVI file), extract all important information, calculate the missing parameters and generate a parameter set for transcode that will create an output file of high quality.

The idea of ripmake is to write a tool which automatically (i.e. with as few user interaction as possible) selects the best parameters for a given ripping task. It should inspect the source (e.g. a DVD or an AVI file), extract all important information, calculate the missing parameters and generate a parameter set for transcode that will create an output file of high quality.

First I thought of a tool that performs all the necessary steps itself and calls transcode for the real work. But I soon found out that often a bit of manual intervention is required to achieve the best results. So a different approach came to my mind: Why not write a tool that generates a makefile for the rip and that embeds all automatic options as parameters in it. You can then call different rules for different rip tasks (e.g. render a sample, render whole movie...) and you can overwrite the parameters by redefining the make variables.

So here it is: ripmake - A makefile generator for your ripping tasks.

The first version was quite alpha and simply tried to prove the concept. The current version is an almost complete rewrite of the first version and is quite useful.

Recoverjpg tool to recover JPEG images from a filesystem image.

Recoverjpeg tries to identify jpeg pictures from a filesystem image.

To achieve this goal, it scans the filesystem image and looks for a jpeg structure at blocks starting at 512 bytes boundaries.
